What are publishing rights?

Publishing rights are the rights held to a composition or piece of written music. These rights are held by the composers and publishers and are separate to the ownership of the recording master rights. The writer splits are agreed when a song is originally written and can be divided equally between the number of writers involved with the song. There are no set splits or percentages for new songs created, however, it is normal to allocate 50% of the writers share to the music composition and 50% to the lyric and melody if there are any.
