What is metadata?

Metadata is a set of data or information embedded within a particular audio/video file that describes the host data, digital music in this instance. For example, song metadata might be ‘Song Title’, ‘Artist Name’, ‘Rights Holder’, ‘Genres’ etc. This is the information that iTunes shows upon playing audio. Metadata is vital information which is required by media professionals and clients to create cue sheets (TV / Film reports about the music used within the work and reported to the performing rights society). It ensures people can identify the recording, the rights holders and other information to ensure that the music will display in certain search criteria within a library for example.
