What is Public Domain?

Public domain works are outside the lifespan of copyright law. PD tracks shouldn’t be marked as one-stop though and the rights should be assigned to a Public Domain contact.

So noted … However, in the case of “traditional” songs, and/or those whose composer is “anonymous” or “unknown,” it would seem that a “one-stop” control of both master and publishing rights would still be in order. An example might be the American spiritual, “Wayfaring Stranger.” In such a case, it would seem the “publishing rights” would pertain to the particular cover’s musical & lyrical arrangement. In these cases, there would not be a “Public Domain contact,” as they are not songs for which an earlier copyright has simply expired. Further comment invited on this opinion.
